In years past, the primary objection to runners' wearing ear phones and similar devices was that safety could be impaired. Runners with ear phones, for example, had more difficulty listening for motor traffic; runners coming up behind them; and instructions or questions by bicycle monitors, course marshals, police officers, aid station workers, and others needing to communicate with runners. Please (1) don't get hurt, (2) don't hurt others, (3) don't be discourteous or unresponsive to those other people wishing to communicate with you, and (4) don't make the race director look bad for trusting you to wear ear phones or similar devices responsibly.
