| | | | | ![[Default Report Image]](images/webControl/genericRpt01.jpg "Report: MEDIA RELEASE - 100K RACE RESULTS - APRIL 20, 2013") MADISON, WISCONSIN -- Carolyn Smith was crowned US female national 100-kilometer road race running champion for the second time, and newcomer Nick Accardo earned his first national title as the male champion, in the Mad City Ultras here on Saturday, April 20.
Carolyn, age 47, of Milwaukee, covered the distance (about 62 miles) in a time of 8 hours, 36 minutes, 26.7 seconds. She finished in third place overall in the race, with only Nick and veteran Chad Ricklefs ahead of her. This was the second national 100-kilometer title for Carolyn, who also won in 2008.
Nick Accardo, age 30, of New Orleans, was locked in a close duel with Chad for hours, well past the halfway point of the race, before Nick pulled away and won the race in 7 hours, 34 minutes, 50.7 seconds. Nick’s pace was under 7 minutes, 20 seconds per mile. Chad, age 45, of Boulder, Colorado, himself a former national champ, finished in second place, less than eight minutes behind Nick.
Winning the national championship titles means that Nick and Carolyn are automatic members on the USA national ultramarathon team traveling to South Africa this fall to compete in the world 100K championships.
For their performances, both Carolyn and Chad won the national Masters championships, awarded to the top runners age 40 and above.
Youngest finisher in the race was Justin Heinz, age 21. Most senior finisher, Roy Pirrung, age 64, won his 73rd national title for finishing first in the 60-64 age group.
