| | | | | Dear Mad City Solo Runners,
You are welcome to come to the Vilas Park shelter on Friday between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. for what is commonly called "packet pickup". I will be there to greet you, chat, answer your questions, and do my best to make you feel welcome, which you certainly will be. Nothing is planned in terms of a pre-race dinner or ceremonies. I just like to hold the packet pickup there on Friday because it helps ensure that you will know how to find the place and to orient yourself to parking areas and to the course, before the early-morning start of the race on Saturday.
I strongly encourage the 100K runners especially to come on Friday because of the 6:30 a.m. (dawn) start of the race on Saturday. 50K runners who have something better to do on Friday afternoon might choose to show up for their packets on Saturday morning, but please do so well before the 8:00 a.m. start of the 50K so they leave enough time to get themselves ready. (Also most of the relay teams won't be showing up until Saturday morning, so it might get a bit hectic at that time.)
Also, please note that our USATF liaison person, Lin Gentling, will be on hand at the Vilas Park shelter at 6:00 p.m. on Friday for a pre-race discussion of the official "rules of competition." I will be sending you a separate email message tomorrow concerning those rules. I'll try to make the point that the rules are important not just because "they're the rules", but also because I try to have the Mad City Ultras mirror the international ultramarathon races such as the World Championship 100K, so the simulated conditions would be good practice for you and your crews.
Timo
