The USATF 100 km National Team will compete in the 2014 International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) 100 Km World Cup under the patronage of the IAAF in Daugavpils, Latvia on August 31, 2014. The annual 100 km World Championship race is the one international venue at which USA Track & Field (USATF) has fielded an ultra-distance team for over a decade. The United States will be represented by the USATF 100 km Team of up to six men and up to six women ultramarathon runners. The team and alternates will be selected by the USATF Mountain/Ultra/Trail Running Council which was established in 1998 to help USATF administer ultrarunning in the United States.
Qualifying Window: 2/27/2013- 6/1/2014
Team Selected: June 2-3, 2014
Team Announced: June 4, 2014
Standards for Consideration for 2014 US National 100 Km Team
To be considered for the USA 100 km National Team, American runners must be citizens of the United States of America, current USATF members and meet one of the following qualifying standards.
American athletes who finish in the top 10 men or women at the 2013 IAU 100 Km World Championship will receive automatic team selection (up to 3 per gender). (N/A for 2014 due to lack of 2013 World Championship) (qualification valid for the following calendar year World Championship only)
The winner of the 2014 USA 100 Km National Championship (if contested) will receive automatic team selection. (qualification valid for the next closest future World Championship only)
The top American male and female finishers at the 2013 IAU 100 Km World Championship will be selected into the pool if they place in the top 15 overall for their gender. (N/A for 2014 due to lack of 2013 World Championship) (qualification valid for the following calendar year World Championship only)
Athletes who meet the following qualifying standards between February 27, 2013 and June 1, 2014 will be selected into the pool: Road 100km: Sub 7:20:00 (Men) or Sub 8:40:00 (Women) Road 50 Mile: Sub 5:40:00 (Men) or Sub 6:40:00 (Women) or who meet the respective qualifying standards at any of the following three well established trail races also will be considered:
JFK 50 Mile (11/23/2013): Sub 6:00:00 (Men) or Sub 7:15:00 (Women)
American River 50 Mile (4/5/2014): Sub 5:50:00 (Men) or Sub 6:50 (Women)
Ice Age 50 Mile (5/10/2014): Sub 6:10:00 (Men) or Sub 7:20:00 (Women)
See the Performance List for a list of athletes who have met at least one of the criteria above.
Team Selection Process
Athletes will be named to the team from the team selection pool using the following procedures:
Athletes will be named to the team based on the order of the criteria above until all the team spots are filled. Priority will be assigned to 100 km road performances, as that is the actual race distance, but 50 mile road and designated trail race performances (see above) will be evaluated by Mountain, Ultra, and Trail Council of USATF and the performance deemed superior overall will have precedence. Athletes not automatically selected to the team through standards 1-3 above will be selected according to best performances within qualifying guidelines.
If fewer than 6 athletes achieve the qualifying standards for consideration, no fewer than 4 athletes (three scoring and one additional) will be named based on performance.
If more than 6 athletes achieve the qualifying standards for consideration, up to 3 alternates (i.e., 6 team members and 3 alternates) will be named sequentially based on performance.
Alternates must meet the same standards for consideration based on performance.
Alternates are encouraged to prepare, as they may be named to compete at any time if one of the other team members is unable to compete.
Selected athletes and alternates will be notified on or before July 15, 2013

Complete 2011 race results are posted here at RunRace.net. | Apr 9, 2011 Apr 9, 2011 | 2562 5 hrs ago | Dear 100K and 50K solo runners,
Registration for the Mad City 100K races closed last night at midnight, and I am very pleased to report that you will be running among 30 runners in the 100K US national championship event, 26 runners in the competitive, non-championship 50K event, and over 40 50K relay teams. These are great numbers. Thank you very much for participating.
Remember how the race starts on Saturday morning. I'll start the 100K solo runners at 6:30 a.m., led by one or more bicyclists for at least the first loop (10 kilometers). At 6:30 a.m., the sun is not quite up, but it is light enough to see without flashlights.
At 8:00 a.m. I'll start the 50K solo runners and all the relay teams, also to be led by bicycle.
You'll all be out there together then. The course closes (and the race ends) at 7:30 p.m.
Packet pickup at the Vilas Park shelter is available on Friday (tomorrow) from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. If necessary, you can come to the shelter on Saturday morning, but I encourage you to come Friday just to spread out the "crowd" a little bit. Also, I will hold a pre-race briefing at 6:00 p.m. Friday (tomorrow) where our USATF rep Lin Gentling and I will talk about the rules of competition, the aid station rules, the course, and so on, and be available to answer any of your questions.
Safe travels, and I'll see you all soon.Timo.
| Apr 7, 2011 Apr 7, 2011 | 2350 19 hrs ago | Dear solo 100K and 50K runners,
I am writing this message to all you solo runners, regardless of whether you will be in the 100K national championship race or not. No matter how "competitive" you intend to be for your race this Saturday, the "refreshment zone" rules will apply to you and your crews. The Mad City 100K attempts to duplicate the rules of competition and "refreshment zone" conditions mandated for the World Championship 100K. In fact, for the US national championship race on Saturday, compliance is required. But I am expecting all solo runners, including 50K runners and non-competitive 100K runners, to be compliant with the National Championship rules , so please bear with me while I lay this out for you.
I think you will find that these rules look "harder" than they are in practice. At the race, you will be able to see how easy it is to comply with these requested rules. I'll have the 200-meter long "refreshment zones" conspicuously marked with signs. I'll talk with your crews informally. My aid station volunteers and I will talk to you. I feel confident that everything will go just as smoothly as it does here every year, even if there were a few new wrinkles added by the International Association of Ultrarunners (I.A.U.) last year.
The guiding principle to be observed is that now your "handlers" cannot accompany you in any way. In this sense, a handler might be your personal crew, or it might be one of my aid station volunteers - the same rules apply. We have all been in races where our handler walks or runs alongside us to hand us a bottle or food so that we don't have to slow down. You can't do that anymore. Yes, your handler can hand you stuff, but no, your handler can't "accompany" you for any distance. When you come to the marked "refreshment zone", your handler must be virtually stationary when handing stuff to you. That means you may have to slow down or stop to receive your bottle, etc. from your handler's hand or from the aid station table. If you fumble the handoff, you have to pick it up yourself or go on without - your handler can't pick it up and bring it to you. If you're given the wrong item by your handler, you have to go back to your handler or table and get the right one - your handler can't chase after you and give it to you.
Take another common situation: you want to drop a bottle or piece of clothing. You do not need to hand it off to your "stationary" handler - you are allowed to drop it anywhere within the refreshment zone. But your handler can't pick it up for you until you've exited the refreshment zone - otherwise, your handler is moving along with you while you are in the 200-meter long refreshment zone, and that can be interpreted as "accompanying" you.
That said, let me assure you that your handler - whether your spouse, valet, or an aid station volunteer - can still be of great service to you. The designated "refreshment zone" at each aid station will be 200 meters long. Within those friendly confines you select where you wish your personal zone to be. At that established and defined point, you (the runner) can stop, step off the course, change clothes/shoes with the assistance of your handler(s), get more stuff out of your duffle bag - all the usual activities that you love to have a crew for. However, all this activity must be done within that personally defined zone which is one (1) meter in front and on either side of your table or small piece of claimed real estate. What you can't let happen is to have your handler "accompany" you during the race, even if it's for a step or two. For example, you can "claim" a piece of real estate approximately one (1) meter by one (1) meter and imagine this to be your personal aid station zone. Within this parameter, you must receive all your aid from your handler(s). Your handler(s) can extend this personal aid zone to be one (1) meter in front (as long as they are off the course and not interrupting another runner) and one (1) meter to either side of the established and defined personal aid zone. Changing clothes, shoes, attending to minor first aid issues, etc. must be done within this parameter .
Last year at the World Championship 100K race in Gibraltar, this rule was put into effect for the first time. Most nations complied, but there was a certain well-known large country whose team very nearly was DQ'd for not taking this rule seriously. After a round of stern warnings in the early stages of the race, an international official was assigned to stand at that country's table and document any further violations so the ultimate sanction could be imposed. I don't say this to scare you, but to emphasize that enforcement is expected of me.
To be fair to all participants, we will employ the rule often used in soccer. We will not give any disqualifications without ample warning and explanation. The ample warning will occur in the form of a verbal "yellow" card. The second warning will be the verbal "red" card, which will result in a disqualification. This will be fair and uniform to all runners and be the judgment of the race referee.
So, as I say, we'll talk you through this on race day. We'll counsel your handlers. We'll answer all questions asked of us. In the end, I believe we'll have what we all want: a fair race, with you runners receiving all the assistance we can legally give you, in a way that isn't all that much different than what you're already used to. Bottom line: our expectation is that we will not issue any disqualifications and that with ample instruction and guidance, we will have full compliance.
Please communicate these expectations to your handlers. We will be fully prepared to assist in any way necessary. Mistakes or misinterpretations are OK and expected. We just don't want the same mistake made repeatedly by the same handlers.
Finally, remember that we will conduct a briefing/meeting for all runner sat the Vilas Park shelter on the evening before the race, April 8, beginning at 6 p.m., where any questions can be addressed.

With the exception of the Raman noodle soup (which won't be available in the early laps of the race), every effort will be made to provide these items throughout the race. If you see a particular item here that you absolutely cannot do without, then the best advice is for you to bring some of your own just in case we unexpectedly run out. If you don't see something here that you may want during the race, bring it yourself. Whatever you bring to the race - your so-called 'specialty needs' - we will make available for you within the aid stations. Remember that all aid must come to you only at the two official aid stations.
M&M;'s, Oreos, Animal Crackers, peanut butter crackers, bananas, oranges, cantaloupe, watermelon, jelly beans, saltines, pretzels, potato chips, Cheez-its, salt, green olives, bread, peanut butter, jelly, Coca Cola, Sprite, Mountain. Dew, Raman noodles soup, boiled potatoes (not sliced).
Of course, we will also have HEED sports drink and good ol' Wisconsin water.
There is no one better at caring for you than our aid station captains and volunteers. They are among the most knowledgeable, experienced, and friendly you will find anywhere. They want to help you. Your success is their success. Talk to them so they can take care of you the way you want to be taken care of. | Apr 3, 2011 Apr 3, 2011 | 2322 10 hrs ago | Dear 50K and 100K solo runners,
Packet pickup for the race will be at the Vilas Park shelter on Friday afternoon/evening, April 8, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. If you are a 100K runner and just can't get there in time, please let me know and I'll make your pickup easier early on Saturday morning. Remember that the 100K race starts at 6:30 a.m. CDT.
50K runners can pick up packets Friday afternoon/evening, or wait until Saturday morning. Your choice. Remember that the 50K race starts at 8:00 a.m. CDT.
Race director Timo Yanacheck will conduct a pre-race meeting at the Vilas Park shelter at 6 p.m. Friday. This will be an excellent opportunity to hear about and ask questions about such important topics as the USATF rules of competition, aid station setups, US team eligibility, and so on. | Mar 20, 2010 Mar 21, 2010 | 3037 13 mins ago | The City of Madison has been fantastic in its administrative support of the Mad City 100K. Timo recently made a preliminary tour of the course with Sgt. Cindy Mierow of the Madison Police Department (shown here) and found everything in order. (FYI, in 2005, Sgt. Mierow was inducted into the Edgewood College Athletic Hall of Fame; runners in the Mad City 100K run through a portion of the college's scenic campus.) The course is over Madison's most popular 10-kilometer race route, much of it within the City's jurisdiction.
Being an urban race, numerous City departments need to be involved in the proper planning of the Mad City 100K events, including Police (Sgt. Mierow) and Parks (Ms. Kathryn Padorr). Timo greatly appreciates the positive working relationship he has enjoyed with City officials over the years.
For more information about the City of Madison and some of the many opportunities and services here (as well as local weather and news), you can check out the City's website at http://cityofmadison.com . | Mar 19, 2010 Mar 24, 2010 | 3398 5 hrs ago | Under the direction of Race Director Tim (Timo) Yanacheck and advisory role of Jason Dorgan (Co Race Director of the Kettle Moraine 100) the website for the Mad City 100K Road Race is open to the public. | Jan 12, 2008 Mar 17, 2010 | 2963 12 hrs ago | The International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) has awarded the 2010 Mad City 100K its Bronze Label. The IAU is the governing body for international competitions such as the annual 100-kilometer World Championship race in Gibraltar this fall.
The Bronze Label identifies the Mad City 100K as having met the standards set for a race of this stature. Bronze Label status assures eligibility for recognition of world records. It also places Mad City 100K finishers on the annual list of world-wide rankings. The Bronze Label has a special importance for elite runners, as it figures into the calculation of the travel grants for those invited to a major IAU competition such as the World Cup. | Mar 17, 2008 Mar 17, 2010 | 3113 3 hrs ago | Timo is very pleased to announce that Deanna Eccles, M.D., will head up the Mad City 100K medical team again this year. The venue for the race of international elite ultramarathoners will be in Gibraltar. USA team selection is now underway. Details of the selection process will be published here in the weeks ahead.
As host of the 2010 USA national championship race, the Mad City 100K has an important role to play. The winning male and the winning female in the national championship race on April 10 will receive automatic berths on the team, assuming they meet the qualifying time standuard (7:20:00 for men, 8:40:00 for women). And Race Director Timo Yanacheck is quick to point out that the Mad City 100K winners have beat the standard every year that the race has been contested since 2007. | Mar 10, 2010 Mar 28, 2010 | 3050 8 mins ago | USA Track & Field has created this new logo especially for America's national championship 100-kilometer run at the Mad City 100K. This is an historic step forward for the sport. Dirk Strumane of Belgium, president of the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU), made the announcement on the organization's website (address below).
Put this in the "You-didn't-hear-it-from-me" category, but Timo says he believes this moves the 100-kilometer road race a little closer to becoming an Olympic event someday.
By the way, if you love ultramarathoning, you will want to check out IAU's website. It's easy to use, published mostly in English, and full of news about fascinating races - past and future - all around the world. | Mar 10, 2010 Mar 10, 2010 | 3436 6 mins ago | 100K solo runners should check in and pick up their timing chips, bib numbers, and goody bags the evening before the race. Place finishes are determined almost as you cross the finish line, and awards are presented to you at the race venue just as soon as possible.
We take into consideration your depleted physical condition after
running an ultramarathon. This has proven to be the most compassionate way for us to both honor you with your award and quickly get you on your way back to the comforts of home. You are more than welcome to hang around for as long as you like, however. | Apr 5, 2008 Apr 10, 2008 | 3150 47 mins ago | The Mad City 100K and US national championship race will be governed by USA Track & Field's official Rules of Competition. See a copy of these rules in our Reports webpage. | Apr 2, 2007 | 3026 15 mins ago | Masters runners (that is, any runner age 40 and over) have a special identification requirement for the race. USATF Masters national championship guidelines mandate that a runner wear a "back tag" indicating his/her age group. In other words, a sort of "bib number" must be worn on the runner's back so that competitors behind can identify that runner's age group. The Mad City 100K being a national championship race, this guideline will be enforced. We will provide each Masters runner with back tag which should be affixed by safety pin or otherwise. This means the back tag (or a reasonable facsimile) will have to be put on each shirt the runner might change during the race. The back tag will simply read "M40" or "F55", for example. | Mar 25, 2007 | 2994 4 hrs ago | Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center rests on the shore of Lake Monona, just down the street from the State Capitol.
